INTRODUCTION TO GAIA

CHAPTER 1

The mushroom cloud had engulfed the world and nothing was left. All manner of creatures and living things had been disintegrated into oblivion. The barren steppe had been left with the aftermath of what had passed. Mankind had reached its pinnacle of self-destruction. Obliteration was its result.

Then the new ice age came and everything was covered for a thousand years. The sub-zero temperatures lasted what seemed like an eternity. Any living organism that did survive, would have to go underground.

The steppe where many civilizations had come and gone was devoid of life. Only the ice and wind lived here. Time had stood still and the remnants of the past was no more. Here it seemed; life had no beginning nor no end. Even other Alien life forms that came to investigate the planet and the glacial freeze didn’t stay for long. For them, the human race had been responsible for its own demise and even trying to understand what and why these events took place, would not contribute nor benefit the higher beings that came to visit. For them, other planets in other galaxies held more promise of ultimate enlightenment.

Then eventually Gaia rejuvenated and the process that would take thousands of years had clicked into gear.

In the beginning there was love surrounded by hate. The two lovers were intertwined and the outside world was closing in.

The lady knew the time had come to let her love to go. For his destiny lay elsewhere. His destiny lay on the field of battle; from which he would not return. Not in this life anyway.

“Why is it that you love war more than me? Every time you leave, a piece of me dies. Why do you torment me so?”

She asked in despair.

He looked at her and with conviction answered.

“War is not what I seek and leaving you is not what I want. But in the field of war, I search for my meaning to my existence. Only when one faces death can one really understand the true meaning of life.”

She took his face in her warm hands and stared deep into his eyes.

“Am I not the true meaning of your life? For you are everything to me and life is what I see in you. How comes it is so hard for you to realise that.”

“I have always realised it. My love for you is not in question. My love for mankind is.”

She snapped back.

“Forget the world, it is just you and I.I don’t need the world. I just want you. Only you.”

She fell into his arms and started to sob.

He caressed her hair and wiped the tears from her eyes.

“My love, my sweet love. If only this was the case. We cannot hide from the world forever. It will find us. Where ever we may go. Civilization eventually spreads and engulfs everything that it makes contact with.”

She looked up sternly.

“Civilization is defined by how one treats the other. You know that everything it touches leaves destruction and havoc. Why are you part of this? Why?”

“I fight to free those that would be enslaved by it. I give my life for a higher cause. Higher than you and I. Without it, the world would descend into eternal darkness.”

She held him tight.

“My love, it’s too late. they will never learn and you will never come back to me.”

“I will come back to you. I promise.”

As he left for the war, his figure disappeared into the mist and all that was left was sadness and tears. When the news came to her that he had died in battle, she shut herself away from the world and lay in grief…..
